Connections

2004
"Correspondences" is a travel film rooted in encounters between men and women in the heart of the subways of two cities: Mexico City and Brussels. The subway serves as a meaningful backdrop: a perfect image of urbanized areas, of industrialized societies living at a frenetic pace. A seemingly innocuous place where people pass each other without seeing one another. An underground network carrying an incessant flow of people. Amidst the bustling crowd, we observe these men and women whose advanced age has erased the sense of urgency that drives the world. In indifference and solitude, they live out their old age in the heart of the city. An old age considered a serious illness to be fought, hidden, or ignored. Yet these people have so much to share with us; they are our roots, our memory. The director, gradually dissolving boundaries, takes us from one subway to another, from one person to another. Even though distances may separate people, the cycles of life are identical everywhere: we are born, we grow old and then we die, it is the codes that differ.
