Ex-Voto

2010
Mexico City * Alfredo Vilchis is one of the last Mexican ex-voto painters. He perpetuates this tradition of painting small pictures offered in thanks to a saint or the Virgin Mary for their miraculous intervention. Generally painted on small sheets of tin, they depict the miracle with striking detail and touching naiveté: a prostitute survives the threats of a drunkard, would-be immigrants narrowly escape death, a child is saved at the last minute from a chemical plant explosion, a Mexican cook escapes the September 11 attacks.
