Isabella Soupart

Belgian filmmaker

Isabella Soupart is a Belgian choreographer, director, filmmaker and visual artist of Polish-Ukrainian origin, based in Brussels. A cross-disciplinary artist, she has been developing a distinctive body of work since 2005 at the intersection of dance, film, performance and the visual arts, with choreographic composition at the heart of her practice.

Also an actress, she made her film debut in the Dardenne brothers’ *Le Fils* and Maria Speth’s *Madonnen*, alongside Olivier Gourmet and Sandra Hüller. This experience informs her approach to directing and working with actors.

Her work is presented on national and international stages, at festivals and in museums, where she devises hybrid forms blending body, sound, image, light and architecture. In collaboration with musicians, composers, visual artists and architects, she creates immersive installations that explore the boundaries between live performance and the moving image.

Alongside her stage work, Isabella Soupart develops a cinematic language at the intersection of fiction, performance and dance film. Her first film, Red Room (2010), co-produced by Cobra Films, depicts a film crew suspended in a state of limbo following the producer’s disappearance. Within this enclosed space, bodies and relationships gradually disintegrate. Alongside her stage work, Isabella Soupart has developed a cinematic language that straddles the boundaries between fiction, performance and dance film. Her first film, *Red Room* (2010), co-produced by Cobra Films, depicts a film crew suspended in a state of limbo following the disappearance of the producer. Within this enclosed space, bodies and relationships gradually begin to unravel.

She continues this exploration through several films that extend her choreographic practice, notably Words (2012) and How to Act (2018), which have been screened at various festivals, including the Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival, the Brussels Short Film Festival and the International Dance Film Festival Brussels.

In 2021, she directed Drei Choräle, produced by ACT2 with the support of the Flemish Government, the Klarafestival, the Artonov Festival and Wallonie-Bruxelles International. This film explores a refined and immersive style, where movement, sound and architecture combine to form a true visual score.

Her work has been recognised with several awards, including the SACD Choreography Prize (Belgium) in 2019, and has received international nominations, notably at the Total Theatre Awards in Edinburgh and the Maeterlinck Critics’ Prize in Brussels. In 2007, she was selected for the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative, where she was mentored by the American director Julie Taymor.

A leading figure on the contemporary scene, Isabella Soupart pursues a demanding and interdisciplinary practice, combining stage and film creation in a body of work deeply rooted in the dialogue between the arts.
