Jouko Aaltonen

Finnish filmmaker

Born in 1956 in Turku, Jouko Aaltonen is a central figure in Finnish documentary cinema. With a doctorate in documentary filmmaking theory, he combines hands-on filmmaking with academic reflection on the image of reality.

His cinema is characterized by a desire to explore "small stories" to tell "big stories," whether they concern social movements, forgotten traditions, or individual destinies in the face of political upheaval. As a producer at Illume Ltd, he has fostered numerous international co-productions, notably with Cobra Films.

His filmography deals with collective memory and utopias.
