Mieriën Coppens

Belgian filmmaker
Mieriën Coppens is a filmmaker born in 1992 who lives and works in Brussels. Since 2015, he has dedicated a large part of his work to documenting the struggle of the collective La Voix des Sans-Papiers (The Voice of the Undocumented) in Brussels. His approach is characterized by extended immersion and close collaboration with the people he films. From 2017 onwards, he intensified this work by partnering with filmmaker Elie Maissin, creating with him a series of short and feature films that form a continuous narrative about exile and resistance. In 2021, he was awarded the Vocatio grant, a recognition that supports young Belgian talent in pursuing their artistic aspirations. His films, often marked by a restrained aesthetic and rigorous observation, address the waiting, occupation, and administrative pressure experienced by undocumented people. His most recent project continues his exploration of the city's margins. He regularly shares his work through the documentary platform Avila Film and participates in international festivals such as Cinéma du Rée.
