Peter Fleischmann

German filmmaker

Peter Fleischmann was born on July 26, 1937, in Zweibrücken, Germany. His career was marked by a strong French influence: after studying in Munich, he received a scholarship to IDHEC (Institut des hautes études cinématographiques – Institute for Advanced Cinematographic Studies) in Paris. There, he associated with the leading figures of the French New Wave and formed a close friendship with Jean-Claude Carrière, who would become his regular collaborator on screenplays.

In 1969, he founded the production company Hallelujah Film with his colleague Volker Schlöndorff. A committed figure in the film industry, he chaired the Federation of European Directors Guilds (FERA) and played a key role in the rescue and restructuring of the Babelsberg Studios in Potsdam after German reunification.

He passed away on August 11, 2021, in Potsdam, leaving behind a filmography that constantly explores the place of the individual in relation to the group and to history.
