In November 2009, the Brussels Assize Court tried Ephrem Nkezabera, a banker and leader of the Hutu Interahamwe extremist militias, the spearhead of the genocide against the Tutsi and the massacre of Hutu political opponents in Rwanda in 1994. The trial was held in absentia, and we were exceptionally granted access to film the proceedings. In light of these proceedings, survivors and relatives of victims share their feelings 15 years after the genocide, addressing these questions: beyond the suffering that will never end, is mourning even possible? And where do reparations and justice stand now that the ICTR (International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda) is about to conclude its work, and victims and perpetrators regularly cross paths in Belgium and other European countries?
