The Opera at the End of the World

2011
A historical road movie takes us behind the scenes of the opera "Maraina" to discover the history of the first inhabitants of the Indian Ocean islands. In Fort-Dauphin, at Camp Flacourt, where officers sent by Louis XIV first encountered the Malagasy people, Jean-Luc Trulès, the composer from Réunion, will conduct his orchestra before an audience that had never seen an opera before. The narratives intertwine to tell this little-known story from multiple perspectives. A musical journey that navigates between the 17th century and 2012, within a triangle connecting Réunion, Madagascar, and Paris, to better understand the Indian Ocean of today.
