Marie-Clémence et César Paes

French-Brazilian-Malagasy filmmakers
Marie-Clémence Paes (born in Madagascar to a French father and a Malagasy mother) and Cesar Paes (Brazilian director and cinematographer) have worked together since the late 1980s. Based in Paris, they founded their own production company, Laterit Productions.
Their cinematic approach is based on a long and respectful immersion within the communities they film. Their cinema does not simply observe; it celebrates cultural resistance through music, oral tradition, and the relationship to the land. They have collaborated with the Belgian company Cobra Films for the co-production of their most emblematic films.
Their filmography explores roots and identity through the lens of art and colonial history. Their work is regularly presented in prestigious institutions such as the Musée du Quai Branly and the Centre Pompidou.
