The sublime Stéphane
Stéphane Mandelbaum leaves behind a prolific and tormented body of work. From childhood, drawing as naturally as breathing, he never ceased to depict violence. In his frantic quest for identity, Stéphane laid bare everything that crossed his mind, each time in a repetitive and obsessive manner. As a Jew, he used Yiddish in his drawings for its graphic richness; he painted portraits of figures as unsettling and mythical as Pasolini, Rimbaud and Bacon; he painted larger-than-life figures of the night, as well as a series of self-portraits in which he distorted and mutilated himself. During the last two years of his life, Stéphane was the director’s neighbour; they met almost daily. At the age of 25, Stéphane was murdered.
