In Malagasy, "Mahaleo" means free, independent, and self-reliant. Despite thirty years of success, the seven musicians of the group have always rejected show business, choosing instead to dedicate themselves to the development of their country. These pioneers of Malagasy blues are also doctors, surgeons, farmers, sociologists, and members of parliament. Mahaleo's songs were the catalyst for the 1972 uprising that brought down the neo-colonial regime in Madagascar. Today, they continue to resonate deeply with the Malagasy people. Guided by the power and emotion of their songs, the film is a portrait of Madagascar today.
