MS Völkerfreundschaft

Ulrike Knorr invites us on an imaginary voyage aboard the MS Völkerfreundschaft, a holiday ship that, until 1985, transported deserving workers, winners of the national lottery, patients undergoing treatment, and privileged members of the regime. At the heart of the journey are human beings and their stories, caught up in a historical movement that transcends them. This cruise embodies the contradiction between the ship's apparent freedom and its role as a "replica of the GDR," an island, a world of luxury on foreign waters.
