When the Trout Swam Up the River is filmmaker Wil Mathijs’s deeply personal odyssey, taking us to the ancient Semois Valley where he discovers that the chalet, the kingdom of his childhood, has mysteriously vanished. Filmed at twilight, in woods shrouded in mist and from a raft specially built for the film, the filmmaker learns that a crime of passion took place in the chalet, which subsequently caught fire. Is this why a sinister atmosphere hangs over the cheerful forest of his youth? Under the piercing gaze of buzzards and the watchful eyes of deer, from the meandering banks of the Semois, he sets out to uncover the truth behind a hidden mystery. Might his encounters with the locals, deeply rooted in the region, help him unravel these mysterious events?
