Faraway roots

2002
I travelled across Mauritania to find a tree that I can see from my window in Belgium. Not a mythical tree, but a tree like any that might be found anywhere. Along the way, I met men and women who shared their perceptions and their quests with me, thereby revealing, in their own indirect way, part of their view of the world and their existence. For some, my tree was a sign of the spirits, of the invisible, or a call from the Light. For others, was it the symbol of a history, a culture, or the end of an era? For others still, it was a tree that one only sees when one is lost…
