Pierre-Yves Vandeweerd

Pierre-Yves Vandeweerd is a Belgian documentary filmmaker whose work falls within the realm of cinema of reality, at the crossroads of anthropology, poetry and philosophy.
Trained in anthropology and African civilizations, since the late 1990s he has developed a cinematic oeuvre attentive to territories marked by war, exile, and memory, particularly in Mauritania, Western Sahara, Sudan, and Armenia. His films—such as The Circle of the Drowned (2007), Lost Territory (2011), The Turmoil (2014), The Eternals (2017), and Inner Lines (2022)—explore the mechanisms of forgetting and give voice to individual and collective destinies often rendered invisible, through a contemplative and sensory cinematic style.
Alongside his artistic practice, he taught film and participated in numerous educational initiatives and documentary festivals in Europe and Africa.
