Fifty years after his assassination, Patrice Lumumba, Prime Minister of the newly independent Congo, returns to haunt Belgium. Through commemorations, conferences, and a return to the site, a high-ranking Belgian official who was present in Elisabethville on that bloody day of January 17, 1961, attempts to exorcise the ghosts of the past. Set to the music of J.S. Bach's St. John Passion, Spectres plunges us into one of the darkest chapters of the decolonization of the Belgian Congo. As much an inquiry into the biopolitical body as a historical investigation, this feature film exposes the ambivalences of a historiography often used for purposes of legitimation.
