2009–2016. Kiruna, a town in the far north of Sweden, 150 km above the Arctic Circle, is preparing for the relocation of the entire town in ‘slow motion’. Caused by the relentless mining operations of the Swedish state-owned company L.K.A.B, the town is on the brink of collapse, and a 4-kilometre move uphill to a desolate region of the wild Lapland Arctic seems the only possible option for the town’s survival and the continuation of mining operations. Faced with this inevitable migration, the film EXODUS BOREALIS will recount a series of unique life stories. Under the watchful eye of the Northern Lights, a natural phenomenon of this region, we will meet immigrants in search of a better life: a local miner, a Saami shaman, and a whimsical science fiction entrepreneur; and we will experience with them the gradual transition from the old town to the new.
