Matthias De Groof

Belgian filmmaker

Matthias De Groof is a filmmaker, lecturer, and postdoctoral researcher at the University of Antwerp, specializing in African cinema and postcolonial theory. His academic background is marked by a wide range of disciplines: he holds master's degrees in philosophy (KU Leuven), international relations (UCLouvain), and film studies (UAntwerpen).

He consolidated his international expertise as a Fulbright scholar at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University (NYU) and conducted research at prestigious institutions in Helsinki, Tokyo, and Bayreuth. His artistic approach is inseparable from his theoretical research, seeking a balance between critical reflection and filmmaking practice.

His cinematic work focuses primarily on the memory of the Congo and the decolonization of Belgian museum institutions.
